What Manner of Man: Week 2 - Pre-Earth Roles

A song I heard by Andy Grammer sent me down a rabbit hole to see if he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because he so beautifully articulated what I believe about our pre-earth life - that we lived with God there and God sent us here to earth:

I was nearly a soul

Getting ready to go

Having one last talk with my maker

He said, "You're going to Earth

For better or worse

We'll see you back here sooner or later"

In a similar vein, I appreciate what Richard M. Eyre said in week 2 of What Manner of Man

“Belief in this pre-earth life provides the basis for answers to questions that are otherwise unanswerable—the “whys” of justice and seeming inequality in this world.” (p17)

I know there are many things in this life that makes sense to me when I know I am in the middle of something (like a three act play) - that there are things that came before, and there is a life after this one.

Another concept that jumped out at me from this week relates to “making” friends with Jesus:

“…because we realize that seeking him here on earth is more analogous to becoming reacquainted with a great and perfect friend than to making a new one.” (p17)

Once I went to visit a family I had briefly lived with, taking care of three little boys, a couple years after the fact. One of the sweet little boys, then about 6, sat by me on the couch and listened as his mom and I caught up and told stories about adventures we had. After one of the stories, he lifted his head off my arm where he’d been resting it, looked me in the eyes and said “I don’t remember you, but you remember me”

I think that is how God is - He knows us, we have shared experiences, He cares for us - but we don’t remember Him. However, some part of us does. And that part is what allows us to recognize Him, to become reacquainted with Him.
