What Manner of Man: Week 4 - After-Resurrection Roles

I have been focusing on joy since having it brought to my attention in October General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (as an example, check out Welcome to the Church of Joy by Elder Patrick Kearon).

It was something that has/had been missing from my life, and I don’t like that. So, I’ve been making an effort to change that and welcome joy back in.

What do I have Joy in?

Here are two things Richard M. Eyre said were joys to know in week 4 of What Manner of Man:

  1. What a joy to know that through reformation and restoration he [Christ] has (and continues to) replace the truth and light that men lose. (p20)

  2. In short, what  joy to know that Jesus’ gospel was and is for all man and that he, in his perfect justice, assures that all men of all ages have the chance to choose! (p20)

It has been a joy in my life to discover truth and light through Jesus Christ. And making time to pray and read my scriptures more regularly and intentionally is bringing joy (and truth and light) back more fully into my life again.

And I have been finding hope and peace (which, I think, could also be phrased as joy) in the fact that ‘Jesus’ gospel … is for all [people]’, and that we have the ‘chance to choose’.

Agency is central to my beliefs, that God allows us to choose (and helps us know what the best choices we can make are through his commandments and personal answers to our prayerful questions).

So, while I don’t have joy in or from all the choices made (by myself or others) I do have joy in the fact that we can make them, and that we can learn and grow from the choices we make individually and collectively, and, hopefully, make better choices based on what we learn and experience.
