What Manner of Man: Week 7 - Optimism and Positive Attitude

A friend of mine introduced me to the idea of integrative complexity - where there can be two contradictory things that are true at the same time.

That seems to apply, at least some, to my thoughts about this section.

Overall, I tend to be an optimistic person, and I also think it can be easier to be optimistic broadly, or on behalf of someone else than for all the particulars of my own life.

The statement that jumped out at me from Week 8: Optimism and Positive Attitude:

  • In the Savior’s gospel, all things are stated in the positive: what to do instead of what not to do, with the overriding positive promise that the sure way of avoiding evil is to be doing good. (p25)

My logical brain says: well, there are definitely “Thou shalt not” commandments, so “all things” are not stated in a positive “what to do instead of what not to do”

But, I am fully onboard with the idea that a “sure way of avoiding evil is to be doing good”

It has been both my experience and my observation that voids will be filled, and if we are not proactive about it often they are filled with things we don’t want in our lives (or at least not with what we really want in our lives).

So for me, this is acting as a reminder to be more proactive in what I choose to do with my time. To be intentional. To seek what I want instead of shunning or avoiding what I don’t. Like my brother reminds me every time we mountain bike - “Watch the path or line you want the bike to follow, not the rock or hole or other obstacle you want to avoid, your bike follows your eyes.”
